Extra details

Walter was the seventh of Charles and Priscilla Bartlett's nine children. After leaving Valley School Walter worked for his brother Alfred at his Rustic & Horticultural Works at 99 Beckenham Lane, Shortlands before going to the gardens at Southwood.

Called up at reaching military age Walter went direct to France, after receiving his training, where he was transferred to the Bedfordshire Regiment. He was expected home on leave when news of his death arrived. He is buried with Private Charles Bland, presumably because the two could not be separately identified.

Thank you to Alan Bland for the photo of their grave.
