Harry was the fourth of Charles and Priscilla Bartlett's nine children. He attended Hayes School and Valley School and was a valued member of the Hayesford Football Club and the Avondale Cricket Club. Worked for his brother Alfred at his Rustic & Horticultural Works at 99 Beckenham Lane, Shortlands.
He served in the Territorials and when war broke out he went to India. When he came home he joined up again and saw service in France but was invalided home with trench fever in early 1917. He recovered and went to the front again but was wounded by a bullet to the chest from which he didn't recover.
