Bromley War Memorial

I believe W G to be an error on the memorial. It should be his brother D S ie David Samuel. William George had also been in the Royal West Kents but was discharged on 14th March 1914 as "not being likely to become an efficient soldier". He had enlisted in March 1913 directly from Kerrison Reform School, Thorndon, Suffolk. He was described as having a slight spinal curvature and being knock kneed. He died in April 1914.

David was the 2nd of David and Eleanor Esther Barnes's four sons.

He enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment on 29th September 1905 at Woolwich. He was described as 5ft 7¼ins tall; 110lbs; fresh complexion; hazel eyes and light brown hair. He served two years at Home and then six in India, being promoted to Lance Corporal. He then joined the Reserve. He was called up on Mobilization on 5th August 1914 as a private with the 1st Battalion. He was killed at the Battle of Aisne.

David's father had died earlier in the year leaving Eleanor with just one surviving son, Joseph Charles.
