George was the eldest of William and Eliza Barnard's eight children. He was baptised on 14th May 1882 at St Peter & St Paul Church. In 1891 he is listed as a patient at the Bromley Union convalescent home in Ramsgate as well as with his family at 12 Park Road Bromley. George's father died in 1896 aged 41. The family were at 15 Mooreland Road by 1901 and in 1911, 3 years after marrying Julie Gertrude, George is living next door with her and their only child Kathleen May.
George had served 6 years with the colours, and would have finished 6 years with the Reserve if war had not been declared. He was called up in August 1914 going directly to the front. At the Battle of Ypres he was wounded in the leg on 30th October and taken prisoner. After being cared for in hospital he was sent to a concentration camp where he contracted typhoid fever and died on 16th March 1915. He attended the Parish School, sang in the Parish Church Choir and was a member of St John's Bromley Cricket team.
