William was the eldest of George & Clara Barker's four children. In 1911 William was living as a boarder with his future wife, Emily Annie Milstead, and her parents at 6 Bourne Road.
William and Emily were married on 23rd September 1911 and their only child, Claude William, was born on 26th September 1913. William had worked for ten years as a gardener at Widmore Court before moving to Kenley with his new wife.
He joined the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) on 11th November 1915, being in the reserves until May 1916 then transferring to Royal West Kent Regiment in October 1916. On enlistment he is described as 5 ft 8 ins tall, weight 134lbs, chest 35ins, physical development fair, vision poor, had an upper denture. He attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
William died on Easter Monday 9th April 1917.
