James was the youngest of William James and Sarah Barker's eleven children. In 1891, aged 7 months, he is known as Andrew. Sarah died between 1891 and 1901. In 1901 Emma, Maurice and James were living with their brother Thomas and his wife while their father is with their sister Emma Manktelow.
James attended Aylesbury Road School before enlisting in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. According to his medal card he also served in the Army Cyclist Corps, The Leicestershire Regiment and the Royal West Kent Regiment. On the Bromley Absent Voters Return he is listed by his sister Rosina as being with the Leicester Cyclists, his address is given as 33 Napier Road.
There is no record of James having died and he is not on the Aylesbury Road School memorial.
