Graham was the second of John Turland Brown and Jane Barfield's five children. Born in 1890 in Victoria Park, Hackney he was baptised on 14th August 1890 at St Mark's church, Bow. His father died in December 1901 then his mother married Richard William Bennett, in Hastings, in 1904. By 1911 Richard, with his wife and five stepchildren, was living at 14 Palace Grove.

Jane died on 6th September 1914 and Graham enlisted in October that year. He immediately volunteered for foreign service and went out with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force early in 1915. He fought at Sulva Bay and was invalided home in December 1915. The following July he went abroad again, this time with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action on 19th April 1917.

He is also remembered in Ilford Cemetery where there is a plaque on his parents' grave with this inscription :-

In proud and loving memory of Graham Eugene Barfield son of the above Sergt 2/4 Royal Kent Regt Killed in action at Gaza Palestine 19th April 1917 aged 27 Years
