Stephen was the only child of Thomas and Martha Baron. The family moved to Bromley in 1904 and Stephen briefly attended Aylesbury Road school. After leaving school he became a tailor. In 1911 Stephen was living with his mother at 147 Masons Hill where she was housekeeper to Arthur Hall, chemist. His father appears to be in Manchester Workhouse.
As a child he attended the Congregational Church in Widmore Road where later he became a valued worker. Before the war broke out he had been studying for sometime to become a Congregational Minister and was an assistant Minister at Little Baddow church in Essex where he is remembered on their Roll of Honour. He later accepted an invitation to enter the Church of England.
He accepted a commission in the Gloucester Regiment, who were billeted in Little Baddow and after training at Oxford and Camberley he was sent to France on 19th July 1916.
