Sydney was born in 1891, the third of George Richard and Jane Annie Baker's nine children. He was baptised on 15th November 1891 at St Luke's Church. He was educated at Raglan School before becoming a gas fitter.
Sydney enlisted with the Royal West Kents on 17th February 1916 in Whitehall, London. He is described as being 5ft 8¾ins tall, weighing 144lbs, and having bad teeth, flat feet and external piles. Sydney was posted, with the Royal West Kents, to France on 26th June 1916 and subsequently transferred to the Manchester Regiment on 23rd January 1917. He was killed on 14th March 1917.
His brother George Frederick also died
