George was the 5th child and youngest son of John and Mary Ann Ball. George lived in Farningham and Sutton at Hone, working as a gardener. By 1916 the family were living at 10 Nelson Road, Bromley.

He enlisted the Border Regiment on 1st December 1906 stating that he was in the Royal West Kent Regiment. He was described as being 5ft 7½ins tall, weighing 118lbs, complexion fair & freckled, hazel eyes and dark hair. He had a scar on his left eyebrow and another on his chest. He was a Congregationalist.

George was promoted to Lance Corporal in October 1907 but reverts to Private in March 1910 for misconduct. He served in Gibraltar for seven months in 1908, then in India/Burma until December 1914. Whilst in India he was awarded a Certificate of Military Telegraphy on 23rd June 1911.

He was home until March 1915 then was sent to the Dardanelles where he received a slight gunshot wound to his right hand on 28th April 1915. George was posted to France on 13th April 1916 and was killed on (or about) 1st July 1916. His mother saw his photo on the front page of the Daily Mirror dated 10th August 1916 and made enquiries as he had been reported missing on 1st July, no reply is in his file.
