George was born in 1889, the eldest of George Richard and Jane Annie Baker's nine children. When he was registered he was given the additional name of Groombridge. He attended Raglan School before becoming a shop assistant.

George enlisted in the Duke of Cambridge's Own Middlesex Regiment and was killed on 3rd May 1917.

His brother Sydney John also died>
