William was the 4th of John Edwin and Emma Bagwell's five children. He was educated at the National School.
William joined the Rifle Brigade in May 1915, going to France in December. He was wounded in the head on the first day of the Battle of the Somme from which he recovered only to suffer shell shock from a nearby explosion. Subsequently he developed heart trouble (he had suffered with rheumatic fever seven times as a child) and was invalided home, being discharged in November 1917. William returned to his former occupation of a copperplate printer with the Grout Engraving Co. Ltd. He underwent an operation in July 1918 and another in August from which he did not recover.
His brother Bertram John also died.
