Baptised as Edward James, in Lewisham on 5th November 1894, Edwin (as he was known) was the eldest of William and Maud Mary Bailey's three children. His father had previously been married to Mary Ann Cranfield with whom he had four children. Edwin was educated at Raglan Road School. His mother died in 1906.

He joined the Rifle Brigade in 1913, going to the Front at the beginning of the war. He was invalided home after Christmas 1914, with enteric fever, returning to the Front in early March 1915. He was severely wounded in the head in April and sent to Cambridge Hospital where he died on 6th May 1915.
