George was the 6th of Charles Edward and Susannah Avis's seven children. Susannah also had a daughter, Blanche, born before her marriage to Charles in 1879. He was baptised in Wrotham on 3rd January 1892. By 1897, when his father died, the family were living in Bromley where George attended Raglan Road School and joined the Church Lad's Brigade. He was a popular member of the Primitive Methodist P.S.A. He was a talented musician and his services as pianist at the P.S.A. were greatly valued.

Aged 18, he joined the Manchester Regiment. He was with them for two years in Ireland before going to India as part of the Jullundur brigade. On 29th August 1914 they travelled to Marseille by foot, train and sea via Egypt, arriving on 29th September. George died at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle on 12th March 1915.

George appears on the Roll of Honour in Manchester cathedral and is also commemorated on his parents' grave in the churchyard of St Mary's, Platt.
