Arthur (known as George) was the eldest of William and Sarah Ann Gurr's two children. His parents were 58 and 42 when he was born. He attended the Keston Schools. Arthur was employed in the building trade, working for some years for F P Duthoit, builder and decorator, of 2 Westmoreland Road.
He married Louisa Shervell in 1897, they had seven children.
Arthur joined the Royal West Kents in October 1915 but was transferred to the East Surreys and then to the Royal Fusilliers. He went to the front in January 1917, was wounded on 26th April and died from his wounds on 3rd May.
His son, George William also died. His sister Mary Ann also lost her husband Thomas Gregory along with other members of his family.
