John (Jack) was the youngest of George and Christian Gunn's seven children. By 1892 the family had moved to Bromley where Jack attended Bromley Lodge School at 102 High Street. From 1898 to 1901 he was at the Mercers' school. After leaving school he entered the Union Bank of Australia and in 1907 went to work with the bank in Australia and then New Zealand. In 1912 he went to Vancouver, British Columbia and then on to Seattle, USA to take up farming.

At the outbreak of war Jack returned home, enlisting in Bedford, in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders on 26th December 1914. On enlistment he was 5ft 7ins tall, weighed 9st 12lbs, had brown eyes and hair, and a medium dark complexion. He was a Congregationalist.

Jack was an excellent sniper. He died from wounds on 14th November 1916.
