Harvey was the youngest child of James and Elizabeth Gritton. His ancestors back to his great grandfather John Gritton (born 1790) were all in the Royal Artillery.
When Harvey enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery on 29th December 1897 he said that he had served in the militia and was with the 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. He saw service in South Africa. On 2nd July 1906 Harvey married Jane Clark at Greenwich Register Office, they had 3 children, sadly their eldest, James Harvey, died shortly after birth. In January 1910 Harvey, having served his 12 years was put on the Reserve. By 1913 Harvey had moved his family to Bromley.
Harvey re-enlisted on 5th August 1914, his description at the time was that he was 5'6¼" tall, had a fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He served in France from 14th September to 21st November 1914, by 26th November he was in the 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester, by 3rd December he was in the Infirmary, Wigan. It is not clear whether he was wounded or sick. Harvey was discharged "no longer physically fit for war service" on 27th May 1915 and issued with a Silver Badge.
