Ernest was the only child of George and Theresa Godward. In 1905 Theresa married John Thomas Lane although there is no trace of a death for George. On 11th December 1906 Ernest started at Portland Road School, Woodside, Croydon, he left on 1st February the following year when the family moved to Bromley.
Ernest served in the Suffolk Regiment and the Royal Engineers. At the end of the war he joined the Merchant Navy. Ernest succumbed to kidney disease on 31st August 1920 at the Ministry of Pensions Hospital, Orpington.
