William was the second of Robert and Caroline Eaton's three children. In 1903 the family were living at 55 Snowsfields, Southwark when William and his sister Kate entered Snowsfields School. William was described as being very delicate and consumptive. When they moved to Bromley he attended Aylesbury Road School. After leaving school William was employed by A W Parsons, Clothier at 38-39 High Street. His mother, Caroline died in 1913.
At the age of 14 William joined the 3rd Bromley Baden Powell Scouts, later becoming their Troop leader. He was also a member of the Church of England Temperance Society.
He joined the Middlesex Regiment in December, 1917, afterwards being transferred to the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed at the Battle of the Somme (1918) when the Allied Fifth Army was driven back by overwhelming numbers across the Somme battlefields. His body was not recovered.
