Harrison was the youngest of Robert Palmer and Lucy Elizabeth Edkins (nee White)'s four children.

Harrison attended Mercers' School from 1905 to 1909 before moving to Dulwich College where he had a distinguished career, being in the football and cricket teams, captain of fives, editor of the Alleynian, cadet officer in the OTB and a member of the school orchestra. He was passionately fond of music and in his memory the "Harrison Edkins" violin prize was established at the College. He was remembered as a well-liked boy with the highest of ideals and standards.

From Dulwich he obtained the "Charles Oldham" Scholarship at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, but instead of proceeding to university he took a commission in the 21st Battalion, London Regiment (1st Surrey Rifles) in September 1915. He went to the front in June 1916 and fell on 15th September leading his platoon in an attack on a German post.
