Extra details

Walter was the second of Henry and Ellen Eastwood's ten children. Their first two were born in Teddington but by 1889 the family had moved to Bromley where the rest of their children were born. Walter attended St Mary's School, Plaistow before taking employment as a gardener for John Gibbs.

He enlisted in the The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) in 1908, serving in Gibraltar, Bermuda and South Africa. Walter was wounded three times, seriously in May 1915 in the shoulder and arm but made a good recovery and returned to the Front in October.

The Battalion War Diary states that between the 6th and 13th August 1916 there had been 7 men killed, 88 wounded and 1 missing. Walter was probably one of these, he died from wounds to his head at 36th Casualty Clearing Station,Heilly on 12th August.

Walter's brother Sidney had died 3 months previously.
