Sidney was the fourth of Henry and Ellen Eastwood's ten children. Their first two were born in Teddington but by 1889 the family had moved to Bromley where the rest of their children were born. Sidney attended St Mary's School, Plaistow.
He enlisted in the The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) in May 1915 and was sent to the Front in August that year. The Battalion War Diary states that they had spent a relatively quiet month near Bailleul on the Belgium/France border when, in the early hours of 30th April, their trenches were attacked with machine gun fire and gas. There were 110 casualties, presumably Sidney was one of them.
Sidney's brother was killed 3 months later.
