Charles was the fifth of Charles and Martha Dent's eight children. He married Hildred Haynes in 1900 in Bethnal Green, by 1905 the family were living in Bromley, Charles being employed as a grocer's assistant at Marsh Brothers, College Road.

Charles enlisted in the Royal West Kents in January 1915 and served at Loos, Ypres, Hulluch and Vimy Ridge, amongst others. He was badly wounded in the shoulder, leg and thigh in December 1917, and was in several hospitals for some months. He was sent back to France at the beginning of September where he was killed just a few weeks later.

His son Charles George was born eight months after his death.
