Thomas was the fifth of Herbert and Charlotte Dennis's eleven children. He was educated at Wharton Road School. In 1911 his parents were at separate addresses, Herbert said he was single. When Thomas died the De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour stated that he was the son of the late Herbert Dennis when in fact Herbert didn't pass away until 1945.
Thomas joined the Royal West Kent Territorials in 1913 then, at the outbreak of war, volunteered for foreign service going to the Dardanelles. Thomas contracted dysentery and died aboard HM Hospital Ship, Glenart Castle, he was buried at sea.
