Arthur was born in Sidcup in 1900, the eldest of Arthur and Annie Dew's five sons. By 1911 the family were in Homedale Road where Arthur (snr) ran a greengrocery. Arthur attended Bickley and Widmore Council School. On leaving he went to work for Nathaniel Begg and Co., coal merchants, at Bickley station for two years, he then moved to a Wholesale House in London. It was whilst carrying out his work that Arthur was killed during the first aeroplane bombing raid of London, he was one of 162 civilians killed that day. His funeral took place at Widmore Wesleyan Church followed by his burial at Bromley Old Cemetery.
