Joseph was the twin brother of Charles and son of Joseph Barrington and Amy Anderson. Joseph was brought up in Southwark where his father was a grocer and provisions merchant. After 1901 the family moved to Bromley and were living at 18 Masons Hill. He was educated at St Dunstan's from 1903 to 1909 and then went to Cliftonville College, Margate. He and his brother then went into the drapery trade. He taught in St Mark's Sunday school and was assistant Scoutmaster of the 3rd Bromley Troop.

In August 1914, along with his brother, he enlisted in the Dunstoniani Company of the 20th London Regt at Blackheath; arriving in France in March 1915 he took part in the actions at Givenchy and Festubert, and in September was at the battle of Loos where the Old Dunstonian Company had heavy casualties. It was in this battle that his brother Charles was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his work in carrying messages under fire. Joseph became ill shortly after Loos and was invalided home to work on the recruiting campaign while he recovered. After a course of officer training, he was commissioned into the 22nd London Regt on 5 August 1916, and later went to Egypt with the 2nd Battalion of the unit. He took part in the advance into Palestine in 1917 and was killed in action on 9 December 1917 at the capture of Jerusalem. He was temporarily attached to the 24th London Regt at the time of his death.
