George was the fifth of Samuel and Agnes Craker's ten children. He was baptised at Bromley Parish Church and attended Valley School before joining the staff of the Finchley Press where he was a printer. He was a keen footballer, playing for St Mary's football club.

He joined the Hampshires as a pioneer in September 1914 and, after training in England and Ireland, went to France in 1915. There he was a noted runner and signaller. He was mentioned in despatches for 'gallant conduct and devotion to duty in the field, April to July 1916' and again in 1917. He was killed in action by a shell.

George was awarded the Military Medal early in 1918 for gallant conduct. His parents received it on his behalf on 23rd May 1919.

George's second cousin A E Craker and cousin W F Byford also died.
