Ernest was the fifth of Frank and Susanna's six children. He was educated at Valley School and attended the local Congregational Church.
Ernest died when the SS Marquette was torpedoed and sunk in the Aegean Sea. The troop ship had left Alexandria, Egypt, with a French escort, on 19th October 1915 destined for Salonika in Greece. On the night of the 22nd the escort was withdrawn and at 9.15am the next day the ship was torpedoed and sank within 10 minutes. It was seven hours before survivors were rescued. Ernest was one of the 128 troops who died, his body was not recovered.
Ernest appears on all the memorials as E W Cox however all births and marriages were registered as Cock.
