Charlie and his twin Edward were the youngest of Henry and Kate Coulling's nine children. On leaving Bickley and Widmore School Charlie was employed by Callenders Cable & Construction Co. Ltd., Erith as a junior clerk. He was a member of St George's Church, Bickley, choir where he was a solo boy for several years.
In March 1917 he joined the Training Reserve afterwards transferring to the Rifle Brigade as a Lewis gunner. He went to France on 1st March 1918. Charlie was killed by a shell on 28th March 1918.
