Leonard was the eldest child of Leonard and Rose Coyle, he had one sister, Ethel born in 1894. His half- brother Horace was born in 1892 when Leonard snr was away training in the army. All three children were left with various grandparents or aunts. By 1898 Rose had married Soloman Reynolds with whom she had two sons. At some time she emigrated to California where, in 1923, she married Howard Robinson.

Being a Greenwich boy Leonard received part of his education at the Royal Naval College and afterwards joined the South Eastern and Chatham Railway Company. Rising from being signal lad he became signalman at St Mary Cray box near Bickley. In 1910 he married Alice Potts, they had one son.

At the outbreak of war Leonard joined the Royal West Kents, then transferred to the King's Royal Rifles finally being attached to the Inniskilling Fusiliers. He worked hard for promotion and studied for a commission which he received five days before he was killed by a sniper.
