Walter was the fifth of Richard and Harriett's ten children. He was baptised at Hunton on 23rd February 1890.The family settled in Bromley sometime after 1901.
Walter was a Regular soldier serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment in India, where he had been for four years, when war broke out. Early in 1915 he was at the Front. On 5th May he was gassed and while trying to get out of the trenches he was shot through the head.
Walter's four brothers also served, all returning.
