Archibald was the fourth of Joseph and Laura Collins' seven children. After attending Beckenham County Boys School he was employed as a boy clerk at the post office. He was a member of the Bromley Cricket & Bromley Hockey Club.

Prior to enlisting Archibald was employed by the Audit Office of the Local Government Board and was a member of the Civil Service Rifles. His first experience of war was in June 1916 in France, where he served with a trench mortar battery until he was transferred to Salonica, where he remained for 9 months. Subsequently he served in Palestine and took part in the fighting for Jerusalem. After two periods in hospital Archibald was posted back to France. He was granted 12 days leave, the first in two years. Back in France he was wounded in the wrist on 2nd October and on the way to the medical post was again wounded in the stomach and died in hospital.
