James was the second of James and Elizabeth Churcher's three children. He had attended the Bickley and Widmore School prior to becoming an under-gardener to Mr Kenneth Chalmers of Blackbrook, Bickley.
He joined the Machine Gun Corps in May 1915. Initially it was reported that James had been wounded on 9th April 1917 by a shell falling close to his position but news came through that he had died from his wounds on the 17th.
James' father, who was paralysed, had died only a few weeks earlier. His mother was awarded a pension of 15/- per week.
