Percy was the only child of Alaric and Marion Churchward. His mother was from the brewery family Shepherd Neame of Faversham. His family lived in Paris where Percy's father was the Continental Agent of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. In 1901 Percy was studying at The Grange School, Hoddesden which was a feeder school for Eton and Rugby. From there he went to Rugby for a year (1904) before joining the South Eastern and Chatham Railway Company as a clerk.
Percy enlisted in the Royal Engineers, going to France in January 1917. He died of double pneumonia in the Military Hospital at Blangies, near Abancourt, Seine et Oise.
