William was the son of Rosina Mitchell. He took the name Chitty in 1895 when his mother married Arthur Chitty in 1895.
William enlisted in the Militia on 5th December 1906 and joined the Royal West Surrey Regiment, a couple of months after his 18th birthday, on 13th August 1907. He was 5ft 4ins tall, had grey eyes and dark hair. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 25th November 1910 and to Sergeant on 9th October 1914. His records show that he served in Gibraltar, Bermuda and South Africa.
He was stationed in Pretoria when war broke out. When the regiment returned to England in September William was granted leave to visit his parents who he hadn't seen for seven years. He embarked for the Front on 4th October 1914 and was killed on 30th, although his parent were not notified until mid December.
