According to the Bromley & District Times George was the only child of George and Susan Childs. After leaving Aylesbury Road School George first worked for Messrs Uridge (greengrocers) before joining his father who worked for GPO telephones. He joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1914 and went to the front in January 1916 where he saw nine months of fighting before being reported missing on 7th October 1916, subsequently presumed killed.

According to the 1901 census George and Susan had two sons, John and George. They were both registered with their mother's maiden name Buck. George snr had married Henrietta Buck in 1895, had she changed her name to Susan by 1901, there is no death recorded for her? In 1911 Susan is living with George William who she states is her only child, John is living with his grandparents in Essex.
