Ernest was the youngest of Charles and Jane Cartwright's two children. He was baptised on 9th February 1890 at St John's, Deptford. He was educated at Quernmore School where he won the School Challenge Cup in sports in 1906 against bigger boys, and several other cups. In July 1907 Ernest joined the London & County Bank and when this merged with the London & Westminster Bank in 1909 he was employed by the newly formed London County & Westminster Bank. He married Kathleen Ritherdon in 1914.

Ernest left the bank to join the Buffs in April 1916, and after 5 months' service in France he returned in December 1916 to take a commission in the Tank Corps. He was advancing with one of his machine guns across the open to the front line when one of his men was wounded. In turning to help the man to safety, he was himself shot by a sniper and died a few hours later.
