William, Florence and Thomas Frederick were born to Annie Elizabeth East before she married George Thomas Butler in 1891. George Samuel was their first child of five. By 1901 Annie is living with Arthur Bryant, they had twins Maggie and Lily.
George attended Raglan Road School and then worked in Hayes.
He joined the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1912 and had been at the Front since 11th August 1914. He was a Private when war broke out but rose to Sergeant. In January 1916 George transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He was wounded in July 1916 and it was thought that he would recover but he died on the 14th.
His brother William was so badly wounded that he was permanently physically disabled. Arthur Bryant's son Sidney also died.
