Sidney was the youngest of Arthur and Harriett Mary Bryant's four children. He was baptised at St Luke's Church on 24th March 1895. Their daughter Alice was adopted by Harriet's sister Lydia and her husband William Whitehead, possibly after Arthur was widowed. By 1901 Arthur is living with Annie Butler (nee East), twins Maggie and Lily are registered as their children.

Sidney attended Raglan Road School then became a carman for Dovedale Laundry.

On the 14th March Sidney enlisted at Woolwich as a Gunner (40595) in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was discharged on 3rd April 1914 at Great Yarmouth as "not likely to become an efficient soldier" due to a hernia. At the time he was described as 5ft 8¾ins tall, fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. His descriptive marks were, two dots back left forearm, indistinct tattooing back of right forearm, mole above left collarbone & front right thigh.

On 28th November 1914 he enlisted again, this time with the Royal West Kent Regiment. By now he is 5ft 10ins tall, weighs 154lbs and has a scar from a hernia operation on the left of his abdomen. On the 7th April 1915 he is posted to the Front. 11 days later he is posted missing.

Annie Butler's sons George and Thomas also died
