Ernest was the eldest of William and Elizabeth Browning's two children. He attended Raglan Road School and was in St Luke's Church Lads' Brigade. On leaving school he was employed by Messrs Eastman and Son, Dyers and Cleaners in the High Street.
In the early months of the war Ernest volunteered for the army and joined the Royal Field Artillery. After a short period of training he was sent to Gallipoli where he was severely wounded, spending time in hospital in Cairo. After a period of convalescence he was sent to France where he served for two years before being taken seriously ill. Ernest appeared to recover but shortly after returning to his battery he relapsed and died of bronchial pneumonia.
