Charles was the second child of Charles and Esther Browning. He was educated at the National School before joining his father in the family greengrocery business.
Charles enlisted in the army in October 1915. After a short time training in London and Wellingham he embarked for France in March 1916, where he was a groom for Major C A Wallace who thought highly of him. Charles survived the fighting and was on leave in early 1919. When he returned to Germany, hoping shortly to be demobbed, he contracted influenza and bronchial pneumonia and was admitted to the 17th Casualty Clearing Station where he died.
Charles's sister Evelyn also lost her husband Henry Thomas Smith.
