Frederick was the eldest of James and Anna Butler's five children. He was baptised at St Luke's Church on 27th November 1892. After school he was apprenticed to Mr Lowe, of Chislehurst, as a carpenter.
He joined the army within a couple of days of war being declared. He was 5ft 9ins tall and weighed 140lbs. His complexion was fresh, eyes hazel and hair dark brown. Stephen wanted to join the Royal Engineers but was drafted into the Royal West Kents, and spent part of his time with them training at Purfleet. He volunteered to transfer to the Pioneer Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment and went to the Front on 31st May 1915. He was on leave for a few days in May 1916 after which he returned to the Front, dying at the Battle of the Somme.
The following items were returned to his family :- identity disc, letters & photos, postcards, mirror, wrist watch, cigarette case, 9ct gold ring, cap badge.
