George was the only child of Charles and Alice Borkett. He was baptised on 7th April 1899 in West Malling parish church. In 1901 he was living with Alice's parents in West Malling while Alice and Charles were at the Laundry, Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire where Alice was a laundress and Charles a garden labourer. In 1911 they were in Charles's home town of Chingford, Essex. Charles died in 1914 and by 1916 Alice had moved to 60 Balfour Road, Bromley where she was still living in 1939.
George enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery in Lewisham.
