Gordon (as he was known) was the third of Frederick and Edith's seven children. He was just embarking on a commercial career when war was declared. Having a good physique, he volunteered at just 16 enlisting in the London Scottish Regiment. He spent a year in training and then volunteered for the transport section. In October 1915, just after his 18th birthday, he was sent to the Front where he was involved in many actions. Shortly after the first day of the Somme Gordon volunteered to transfer to the Machine Gun Corps.

While manning his post in Leuze Wood, near Combles, Gordon was killed when a shell burst in front of the gun he was working on.
