Vernon was the second of Ralph Jermy & Sophia Mary Beevor's six children. He was educated at Rosslyn House, Felixstowe and at Felsted. In August 1914 he went to Canada to continue his education. He was at the Collegiate School, Kingston, Ontario for a year and matriculated at the Queen's University, Kingston. He was a member of the Queen's Officer Training Corps.
Vernon returned to England in 1916 and obtained a commission in the Essex Regiment. He was awarded the Military Cross for his work in the Regina Trench engagement. "He led his men in the attack with great courage and coolness, captured the enemy trench and consolidated the position with marked skill." During this action, on October 21st 1916, he was wounded in the leg and returned to England where he was able to spend Christmas with his family who were now living in Bromley. He went to the front again in January 1917 and was shot by a sniper, whilst leading his platoon, on March 10th.
