Ernest was the 5th of Ernest and Atlee Helen Simmons' eight children. His older brother, Ernest Charles, was known as Charlie. He attended the Bickley and Widmore Church of England School.
Before joining the Navy on 14th June 1913 he had worked as a signal box boy. He was described as 5ft 7ins tall, had light brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. In his short career, after training at HMS Ganges Ernest served on HMS Berwick, Pembroke, Juno and King Edward VII. It was whilst on the latter that he was washed overboard during a heavy gale off the south west coast of Ireland.
Ernest's brother-in-law Sidney Mattholie and his brother Leslie also died.
