Leslie was the second youngest of Henry Mark and Rosanna Mattholie's 14 children. He was baptised on 22nd October 1886 at Diss parish church with his brothers Sidney and Harry. He attended Church elementary school before becoming a porter for Mr Albright, Diss.
Leslie enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment on 10th December 1901. He was described at being 5ft 3½ins tall, weighing 112lbs, with a fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair.
By 1909 he was in Bromley where he married Kate. He ran a very successful window cleaning business with his brother Sidney - Sundridge and Bromley Window Cleaning. He sold his share of the business and went to Australia, but came back and took over a window cleaning business in Sevenoaks before being called back to his old regiment on 5th August 1914.
A few days later he was in France. He was reported missing on 24th August, but his death was not confirmed until nearly a year later.
Brother Sidney's brother-in-law Ernest Simmons also died.
