Robert was the youngest son and 6th child of Thomas Edward and Mary Elizabeth Mockridge. He was married to Grace Kezia Crafter whose brothers William & Francis Crafter and cousin Zebulon Relf also died.

He attended the Board School Barnsbury, Islington. Before joining the forces he worked for eleven years for Messrs Welford's, High Street, as a milk roundsman. Previous to which he worked for Messrs Shillcock and Sons, chemist, High Street.

Robert joined the Royal Field Artillery in December 1914 and after training went to France in July 1915. He took part in fierce fighting during his three years in France and Flanders, having been at Ypres, Amiens and Cambrai. He had been home on leave in May 1916, again in October 1917 and was expected home again but was struck on the head by a piece of shell and killed instantly.
