Edward was the eldest child of Edward Whyte and Harriet Adams. After attending Aylesbury Road School Edward served his apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner with Mr Frank P Duthoit of 2 Westmoreland Road. At the time of joining up he was employed by Messrs W L Crossley & Son of Bromley.

Edward was a tenor soloist of St Mark's Church Choir for about 10 years and a member of the Bromley Choral Society for 4 or 5 seasons. He played the clarinet and bass clarinet. An excellent musician, and former Conductor of the St Luke's Men's Hour Orchestra, appointed in October, 1913. Before joining up he took the band to several local hospitals to entertain the wounded. He also played in the orchestra at Orpington under Mr Goldsmith. Edward married Lillian Forstall on 18th December 1909, they had two sons.

Edward joined the Royal Engineers in June 1916 and went to France in September 1917, being transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was admitted to hospital on 13th May, 1918 suffering from acute mustard gas poisoning and died 2 days later.

Lillian also lost her brother Leslie.
