Leslie was the third of Walter and Clara Fostall's four children. The family had settled in Bromley by 1894 when Leslie's youngest sister Gladys was born. He attended Aylesbury Road School and then Beckenham County Boys School. He was a member of the Church of England Temperance Society.
Leslie enlisted with the Territorials in September 1914 and went out to Jhansi, India later the same year. He stayed there until August 1915, when he volunteered for the Mesopotamia expedition and went through the siege of Kut. After the surrender of Kut he suffered from dysentery but still had to go through a forced march to Bagdad. He died on the way but it was not until repatriated persons reached home that there was news of his fate.
Leslie's sister Lilian also lost her husband Edward Lewis Adams.
